IT'S 1:30AM & I'M SITTING IN BED WITH MY LAPTOP.
Now how's that for authenticity?
It's been a rather insane kind of week.
This past weekend I had an engagement session Friday night, a wedding all day Saturday, and then another engagement session Sunday morning. I then had another shoot Wednesday, plus meetings with potential clients.
I'm managing 26 weddings + 18 other sessions while trying to work my way through edits of 10,000+ photos, deliver sessions I just finished editing, maintain this blog site, keep up on social media, and finalize a total aesthetic remake of my main photography website. Oh and I leave for Chicago tomorrow afternoon (well actually this afternoon if we're being technical) for four days, come back for a day and a half, and then head back to Chicago to fly to Boston for another three. #deepbreaths
I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting something here...but I think you get the idea. It's been a rather crazy past week.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU ALL OF THIS?
Because I want you to know that my life isn't just gorgeous photos, awesome trips, and amazing clients.
Now don't get me wrong – I'm incredibly privileged to be able to travel for my work, I'm always humbled by the amazing clients I get to adventure with, and I probably get giddier than anyone else when I finish up a job and see the final product.
BUT EVERY JOB HAS IT'S STRUGGLES AND EVERY VICTORY REQUIRES A BATTLE.
I'd love to be able to say that my job was always the beautiful sessions and awesome locations you see on my website. Those moments are amazing, to be sure, and when you're standing on the edge of the Pacific at sunset it's easy to forget the volume of work it took to get you to that point.
But that's just the thing.
There's a lot of work that has to be done behind the scenes to make trips happen and produce the kind of work I so long to create...and sometimes that means sitting at the computer for 18 hours working through mountains of edits or fighting through piles of emails to nail down the perfect wedding timeline.
...or in my case laying in bed writing a blog post at 2am because I simply won't have time to write it tomorrow :).
Whatever it is for you, please know you're not alone.
If you're fighting for motivation or discouraged by a seemingly insurmountable workload – I've been there. If you're disheartened that your job didn't turn out to be everything you hoped it would or simply tired of the climb – know that after thousands of exposure tweaks and white balance corrections even I sometimes feel like throwing in the towel.
BUT THE PURSUIT OF ANYTHING AMAZING ALWAYS REQUIRES A LOT OF NOT-SO-AMAZING WORK BEHIND THE SCENES.
So if you're struggling to keep going today, take heart. Look back on past successes and let them fuel your fire to keep pressing on. Jump on Instagram and get inspired to keep growing.
And then sit down, strap in, and do whatever needs done to keep you moving forward.
